Extreme heat watch issued for Livingston County

A heat wave is set to hit southern Michigan soon, with dangerously high temperatures and heat indexes expected June 21-24.

At 2:51 a.m. June 20, the National Weather Service issued an extreme heat watch starting the afternoon of June 21 and running through the evening of June 24. In the release, NWS said there will be “dangerously hot conditions” with a heat index of 104 degrees possible.  

NWS said heat-related illnesses “increase significantly” during events of extreme heat and high humidity.  

Where are cooling centers in Livingston County?

Salvation Army at 503 Lake St. in Howell will open as a cooling shelter 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 21 and 12-4 p.m. June 22. Regular hours are 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. Mondays-Fridays.

The Livingston County Health Department recommends everyone stay indoors during the watch. Those who need to cool off should consider heading to a mall, library or shelter, according to a post June 19.
