An Escanaba man has been convicted in the murder in 2023 of a pregnant woman, officials said.
Tavaris Jackson, 35, was found guilty of first-degree murder and assault of a pregnant woman, intentionally causing a miscarriage or stillbirth, and using a firearm during the commission of a felony, the Michigan Attorney General’s Office said.
Authorities said Jackson killed Harley Corwin, 22, of Escanaba on July 3, 2023. She was pregnant at the time of her death; her remains were found in a field in Ford River Township on July 8, 2023.
Jackson is scheduled to be sentenced June 2. He faces up to life in prison for the murder and assault charges.
“While no outcome can undo this devastating loss, I am grateful to the prosecutors who helped secure long-awaited justice in this tragic case,” said Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel in a statement. “I hope this verdict provides a sense of closure for Harley’s family.”
Jackson initially was charged by the Delta County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, but the state Attorney General’s Office was appointed to the case in August 2023.
