As Canadian wildfire smoke continues to strangle Michigan, the Detroit Zoo remains open – with caution.
“The health and safety of our guests, staff and the animals in our care is always our top priority, and we are closely monitoring the air quality conditions to guide our operations,” said Detroit Zoo communications manager Sarah Culton in an email to the Free Press.
“The Zoo remains open at this time, with some modifications. All educational programming, including camp activities, has been moved indoors, and the Australian Outback Adventure walk-through experience and Goat Yard Encounter are temporarily closed until conditions improve. Additionally, out of an abundance of caution, we have postponed our 21+ event, Summer Sips presented by KeyBank, that was scheduled for tomorrow evening to Aug. 14.
“Species that are naturally more sensitive to air quality already live in climate-controlled indoor habitats or have been moved to their indoor spaces. Animals with access to outdoor spaces today can choose to move indoors, where circulating air systems maintain a comfortable environment. Our animal care team is closely observing all animals.
“We take the care of the animals who call the Zoo home very seriously and will continue to monitor conditions throughout the day. We will share updates with our guests and community if conditions change.”
