Houston — This feels on-brand for the 2026 Tigers.
The night after he hit three home runs and knocked in six runs, Colt Keith was scratched from the lineup Tuesday with a sore right wrist. X-rays, taken on Tuesday, were negative.
“I woke up with a stiff wrist,” Keith said after the Tigers lost 4-2 to the Astros. “It was bugging me. I got some treatment and the medical staff here wanted to get it checked out. The results were (clean). It’s inflammation, a little sprain. I look forward to being in there (Wednesday).”
The soreness stems from a terrific play he made in the seventh inning, taking a hit away from Christian Walker, backhanding a ball behind the bag at third and making a strong, off-balance throw to first.
He slipped after releasing the ball and tumbled into foul territory.
“I tripped on the grass,” he said, sheepishly after the game. “I think everybody was watching the ball when I threw it. Felt super athletic (sarcasm).”
Keith stayed in the game and in the ninth hit his third homer of the game, an opposite-field shot into the Crawford Boxes.
Keith was on the bench Tuesday, but manager AJ Hinch said he didn’t want to use him.
“That’s a tough one,” he said. “We got the evaluation during the game that the diagnosis is positive. We avoided something big. It was going to be a special circumstance when I used him but I didn’t really want to. And the game never unfolded for me to use him. I’m just happy to get the news that it’s just a bruise.”
As was Keith.
“Little bit of a scare,” he said. “But a big relief that nothing was wrong.”
