Chester Twp. carjacking suspect assigned for competency exam

HUDSONVILLE — The suspect in a May carjacking and police pursuit will have a competency exam before his court case moves forward.

Connor Mitchell, 26, faces a total of 10 charges, including one count of unlawful driving away of an automobile; five counts of assault with a dangerous weapon; one count of fourth-degree fleeing and eluding police; and three counts of resisting and obstructing a police officer.

Ottawa County 58th District Court Judge Judith Mulder adjourned Mitchell’s preliminary examination June 10, pending the results of a competency exam. Court records show the preliminary exam has been rescheduled for July 16.

According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence on Crockery Shores Road in Chester Township around 4 p.m. May 9 after receiving reports of a male suspect arriving at the home and stealing a Ford F-250.

OCSO located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop in Spring Lake, but the driver allegedly fled. Several minutes later, deputies wrote, Mitchell rammed a civilian vehicle with three occupants at North Fruitport Road and East Savidge Street. The crash also involved a police cruiser.

A second pursuit then began, police wrote, leading into Crockery Township. After deputies boxed him in at the intersection of Cleveland Street and M-231, Mitchell allegedly rammed multiple police cruisers and drove eastbound on Cleveland Street.

Because a bridge on the road was impassible due to ongoing maintenance, Mitchell attempted to turn into a private driveway. In doing so, he reportedly struck another vehicle, which disabled the Ford F-250.

According to OCSO, no motorists were injured.
