'Goblintimacy' daters are letting it all hang out. What they're doing

Most people show up to their first date their best self, in their best clothes and put on their best performance.

A new term however, “goblintimacy” refers to people showing up as themselves, for better or worse: That means not hiding any flaws and being up front about issues and baggage from the beginning.

“Goblintimacy is the dating cousin of ‘goblin mode,'” Amy Chan, a dating coach and the author of “Unsingle: How to Date Smarter and Create Love that Lasts” told USA TODAY.

“It’s a rebellion against showing up on dates performing a curated version of who you think someone wants and, instead, showing up as your real, authentic, actual self — quirks, flaws and imperfections included.”

Revealing your inner “goblin,” you’ll weed out partners who would not be right for you in the long term.

Goblintimacy isn’t the only term coined in the modern age of dating. Recently the phrase “alpine divorce” went viral in reference to partners who leave people in the wilderness or other places they may be vulnerable and simply walking away.

Michigan ranks 11 in best state for singles

In a 2026 nationwide online dating study, WalletHub ranked Michigan 11th when it comes to the best states people single and ready to mingle.

Using 29 metrics, the study evaluated three dimensions across states: dating economics, dating opportunities, and romance and fun.

In the dating opportunities category, WalletHub analyzed several factors, including cost of living, number of attractions in each state and the share of single adults in the area.

Michigan ranked 28th in dating economics, was 12th best in romance and fun rank and received an overall score of 55.52 graded on a 100-point scale.
