The first official trailer for “Avengers: Doomsday,” was released this week, amping up Marvel fans for another epic team effort to prevent world-ending disaster, and this time the heroes will fight Doctor Doom played by Robert Downey Jr.
On Monday, July 20, Marvel Studios released a two-minute trailer for “Avengers: Doomsday,” marking the fifth in the “Avengers” series following “Avengers: Endgame” that released in 2019.
Following a daunting narration by “Thor” played by Chris Hemsworth, the trailer showed familiar faces gathering from different worlds including “The Fantastic Four” and “X-Men” teams to join the “Avengers” against what is presented as the worst enemy yet, “Doctor Doom.”
“I’ve fought with many warriors in my time. They were far stronger than all of us put together and they died. They died facing enemies and threats that scared me far less than this one,” “Thor” says in the trailer.
The trailer ended with Thor standing before “Captain America,” played by Chris Evans, in disbelief as his character previously retired. It wasn’t a huge surprise to see him after “Avengers: Doomsday.” Teasers suggested his return, but fans remain weary of the legitimacy, meaning there may still be a catch, according to ScreenRant.
The trailer also showed Robert Downey Jr. as his new Marvel character “Doctor Doom,” after playing “Iron Man” for several years. He sacrificed himself in “Avengers: Endgame” to end the apocalyptic threat made by “Thanos”
Marvel’s decision to cast Downey Jr. as “Doctor Doom” was announced in July 2024 during the San Diego Comic Con where Downey Jr. dramatically unveiled his mask on the panel’s stage.
Throughout the trailer, “Doctor Doom” kept his mask on so it is unclear whether his face will be revealed to others in the movie, ergo the connection between “Iron Man” and “Doom.”
“Avengers: Doomsday,” is set to premiere Dec. 18, 2026.
With the first trailer release, Marvel announced that tickets are currently on sale for infinity vision certified theaters, which are premium large theater screens.
