Canton Township — A Canton Township intersectionhas reopened following a fiery crash involving a semitractor-trailer that injured nine people Wednesday afternoon.
The collision took place around 12:47 p.m. at the intersection of Ford and Haggerty roads, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. The intersection reopened Wednesday night.
Police said nine people were transported from the scene with injuries ranging in severity from minor to critical.
Five of the injured were occupants of vehicles involved in the crash, police said. The other four were officers who were hurt trying to rescue the trapped occupants.
Bert Sterling of Westland was in the area at the time of the crash. He said there appeared to be two vehicles involved in the collision, the tractor-trailer and a pickup that struck it while the driver was attempting to make a turn.
The intersection remains closed in all directions as crews work to clear the scene, the Canton Public Safety Department said in a press release.
“Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while crews work to manage the scene and ensure public safety,” the department said.
Police said they are unsure when the intersection will reopen to traffic.
Authorities have not commented on the cause of the crash or identified anyone who was hurt in the incident.
