Big changes continue at Michigan State

I often have the thought when driving through Michigan State’s campus that so many of its buildings have stood the test of time. Landon Hall, the Union, Cowles House.

That’s true, too, for many other buildings on campus, but change seems constant. The Broad Museum is an obvious change going back a decade or so, and 1855 Place on Harrison Road is a more recent development. And now the $200 million, 293,000-square-foot Student Recreation and Wellness Center is slowly coming online. That means IM West, which has seen so many pickup basketball games and other activities in the last 70 years, is now closing, with demolition expected in the spring of 2027.

Reporter Karly Graham visited IM West this week, and spoke to people who used their lunch breaks to get in a quick workout or a pickup game. It holds many memories for so many generations of students and employees.

More change is certain, and that may include a remake to the areas around Spartan Stadium, Munn Arena and the Breslin Center. Graham obtained through a public records request to the university proposals from three developers who have big visions for a “Spartan Stadium District,” the latest proposed ideas came after trustees punted on a plan for a Spartan Gateway District further south near Trowbridge and Harrison roads.

The developers have different ideas, from rooftop sports bars to condos for alums to student housing and other amenities that are focused on the fan experience. She waded through more than 900 pages of proposals from the developers to give you a glimpse at what their plans are.

If you’re an MSU fan or frequent campus, her story is worth a read.
