Monroe County Region high school sports roundup for April 23-24, 2026

GIBRALTAR – The Downriver League won bragging rights.

Gibraltar Carlson hosted what was billed as the Battle of the Leagues pitting the Huron League against the Downriver League on Friday, April 24.

Gibraltar Carlson won the boys meet and Woodhaven was the girls champ.

The edge for the Downriver League went deeper than that. It took the top three places for the boys and three of the top four for the girls.

St. Mary Catholic Central’s girls took second for the best showing for the Huron League.

Carlson’s boys were led by Reece Wieckowski III, who won the 100 and 200 dashes and anchored the winning 800 relay.

Sam Przytula also was a double-winner for the Marauders in the shot-put and discus. Carlson’s Zachary Peterson ruled the high jump.

Noah Latzy, Rodney Mullins and Tristan Joaqauin joined Wieckowski on the 800 relay and Carlson took the 3,200 relay with Wyatt DelValle, Matthew Effah, Daniel Pak and Jack Dunwoody.

SMCC’s Christian Craanen ran a personal-best 4:29.38 to win the 1,600 and Cameron Crane of New Boston Huron had a PB of 13-6 to rule the pole vault by two feet.

Airport had a pair of girls champs as Ella Baker took the 800 meters and Olivia Kemp the shot-put. Bella LaFountain of SMCC came out on top in the 1,600.

FRIDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Giuliana Nastale, Erie Mason: Won the 100 and 200 and was second in the 400 meters the 400 relay during the Hillsdale Invitational. She helped the Eagles place second in the team standings. Allison Ost (1,600) and Makenzie Wolfe (3,200) were champions for third-place Summerfield. Wolfe and Ost ran with Abby and Grace Raymond on the winning 3,200 relay. Grace Raymond was second in the 800.

Mckenzie Heath, Alexandra Haddis, Aisley Cousino and Maddie Salenbien, Dundee: Combined to win the 400 and 800 relays at the Leslie Blackhawk Invitational. Merry Schwab (pole vault) and Aubrey Przybylski (discus) were individual winners while Salenbien in (200), Madeline Dukeshire (high hurdles) and Lily Ratliff (long jump) were second.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Austin Taylor, Summerfield: Cleared a personal-best 13-0 to place second in the pole vault at the Hillsdale Invitational.

Luke Bishop and Braxton Ellison, Dundee: Were champions in the Leslie Blackhawk Invitational. Bishop took the pole vault and Ellison the long jump. The 1,600 relay of Warren Thebolt, Anthony York, Julius Jenkins and Jayden Sharpe took second

Lincoln Murbach, Erie Mason: Set a meet record of :40.85 to win the low hurdles at the Livonia Franklin Night Lights Meet. Joseph Colaluca was third in the 800 and ran with Logan Doom, David Mills and Caleb Healey on the second-place 3,200 relay.

BASEBALL

Ryan Burgor, Airport: Cracked a two-run homer in the first inning of a 3-2 win over Ann Arbor Pioneer. Drake Ferris plated the other run in the second on a sacrifice fly. That was enough for Carter Sell and Brady Harrison, who combined on a 2-hitter.

Allen Roof, Summerfield: Racked up four hits, including a double and a home run during a 9-2 win over Vandercook Lake. Reece Kalb accumulated three hits, including a pair of doubles. Clark Ciacelli and Josh Horak logged two hits each and Rylee Schiffler struck out 10 to earn the pitching win for the 5-2 Bulldogs. The second game was suspended in the third inning with Summerfield leading 12-6.

SOFTBALL

Alehia Addis, Summerfield: Led a strong performance by the freshman class by driving in four runs in the first game of a sweep of Jefferson by identical 9-4 scores. Fellow freshmen Hayley Kohls, Chloe Lilly and Calee Schiffer also made major contributions. Brea Olmstead delivered a big hit and Claire Franzen pitched well. “Proud of this group for continuing to compete and build momentum no matter who we face,” said Summerfield coach Christine Zappone.

PREP SOCCER

Maggie Mentzer, New Boston Huron: Returned to the lineup with an early goal to get Huron started on the way to a 5-1 win over Airport. Miley Skamiera registered two goals and an assists and Malaya Singer a goal and two assists. Avery Turk also scored, Maddie Wilson was credited with an assist and Ava Banko, Kayla Christesen, Maiya Thomas and Nhi Vo led the defense in front of Brooke Burke.

Alena Schafer, Jefferson-Erie Mason: Netted a pair of goals in a 3-0 victory over St. Mary Catholic Central. Izzy Kreitsch scored the other goal, Madalyn Thompson notched a pair of assists and Emalyn Hammond added an assist. Haley Burden recorded her third shutout of the season with and Alaina Rosensteel controlling the midfield.

BOYS GOLF

Alex Faryniarz and Devin Rhoades, Ida: Combined for a 77 to make the all-tournament team at the Adrian Madison Ryder Cup Invitational. Connor Zimmerman and Kamden Jones combined for an 80.

GIRLS TENNIS

Monroe, Bedford split

MONROE – Monroe and Bedford split their girls tennis match right down the middle Thursday.

Not only did the teams play to a 4-4 tie, but each won two singles and two doubles matches on Thursday, April 23.

Monroe’s Allie Wells was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles and teammate Ashken Aaron dropped just four games at No. 3.

Doubles wins for the Trojans came from Molly Casey- Aliya Phillips and Jillian Gorman- Claire Hopps-Zunk in the final two flights.

Bedford pulled out a pair of three-set singles thrillers.

Jayda Philbeck won 6-4 , 0-6, 13-10 at No. 2 and Dorothy Dillon prevailed 6-3 , 4-6, 10-8 at No. 4.

The Mules took the top two doubles matches with Tara Thompson- Riley Sucheck and Keirsten Soss-Claire Johnson.

Skylar Warren and Monica Steinmetz, Gibraltar Carlson: Posted singles wins in a 5-3 victory over Southgate Anderson. Doubles wins came from Morgan Wort-Maggie Samford, Mena Sladich-Maddy Mead and Sophia Gaynier-Molly Owen.

Finley Hines, SMCC: Pulled out a three-set win at No. 2 singles to spark a 6-2 victory over Riverview. Gracelynn Carter also was a singles winner and the Kestrels swept doubles with Nin Nguyen-Gennevieve Sottile, Anna DeLucia-Valentina Galati, Emma Sinnott-Olivia Martin and Cali Notario-Catherine Brinkmeier.

THURSDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS

BASEBALL

Evan Bennett, Dundee: Went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs during a 7-4 win over Blissfield. Cam Fairchild also had two hits to support the pitching of Wyatt Hickey and Brayden Mason.

Trent Pfeiffer and Grant Preiffer, Ida: Combined to go 5-for-5 in a 7-1 verdict over Clinton. Trent went 2-for-2 and drove in three runs and walked twice from the lead-off spot and Grant went 3-for-3. Jacob Down added hits. “Carter Darian was really good for us on the mound to finish the game,” Ida coach Jimmy McMonagle said. “Really good timely hitting again.” The Blue Streaks got more strong pitching from Hunter Hemelgarn and Cam Riggs to win the second game 2-1.

SOFTBALL

Hayley Overton, Monroe: Plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning with a bunt, then delivered two hits in the second game of a 2-1, 13-2 sweep of Grosse Ile. Maeve Westerlund gave up only an unearned run in the opener and Olivia McMahon earned the win in relief. The offense picked up in the second game with Aly Lewis, Delaynee Miller, Soffia Elmer joined Overton in the two-hit club to give winning pitcher Cecelia Aulph plenty of support.

Macy Ovall, Whiteford: Threw all 8 innings of a 3-2 victory over Ida. She gave up just three hits and struck out nine. Alex Haws went the distance for Ida. “Both pitchers threw well tonight,” Whiteford coach Matt VanBrandt said. “It was a classic high school battle, and the outcome was never certain.”

Brooklyn Martin, Airport: Had a run-scoring single in the first game and went 3-for-4 in the second game, but the Jets were swept 3-2 and 4-3 by state-ranked Walled Lake Northern. Julia Dyson pitched well in both games.

BOYS GOLF

Levi Evans, Dundee: Shot 39 for the second-best individual score of the day in a Lenawee County Athletic Association jamboree. Ida got a 40 from Connor Zimmerman and a 41 from Devin Rhoades. Clinton was the team champion with 159. Ida was second with 172 and Dundee fourth with 175.

GIRLS TENNIS
