As the 101st Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race approaches, participants are lining up along the Black River in preparation.
Port Huron Harbormaster Mike Davenport said Thursday, July 10, 80 boats participating in the race have already docked along the Black River, with about 110 more registered to participate in the race.
Those who want to check out the boats and speak to the racers can stop anywhere along the Black River.
“Anywhere from the mouth of the river to about the 10th Street bridge is a good spot to see them coming in,” Davenport said.
The number of boats participating represents a significant decrease from last year’s 100th Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race, which saw more than 300 teams registered to participate.
The race is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 12. Racers are split into divisions for different courses, which include the shore course that follows the Michigan coastline and the Cove Island track which has racers go to Cove Island before turning back to Mackinac Island.
