When it comes to higher education, Ohio has a strong a mix of large public universities and smaller private institutions, but only a handful rank among the nation’s top schools, according to a new report.
The 2026 U.S. News & World Report National Universities ranking placed The Ohio State University as the state’s highest-ranked university, followed closely by Case Western Reserve University. Meanwhile, schools like Miami University and the University of Cincinnati rank well for value and performance.

Ohio State leads Ohio rankings, followed by Case Western and Miami
Ohio State remains Ohio’s top-ranked public university at No. 41 on the USNWR national rankings. It also has the state’s largest undergraduate campus, with nearly 47,000 students. Nationally, Ohio State (No. 41) and Case Western Reserve (No. 51) are the only Ohio schools in the top 60.
Case Western Reserve, ranked second in Ohio, is the state’s highest-ranked private university and known for small class sizes and research strength.
Three Cincinnati-area universities appear on the list, with University of Cincinnati, Xavier, and Mount St. Joseph all appearing in the rankings.

These Ohio universities have the highest enrollments
The state’s highest-enrollment schools are all public, including Ohio State (46,815 undergraduates), the University of Cincinnati (33,572), Kent State (20,841), Ohio University (19,888) and Miami University (16,816), according to U.S. News & World Report.
How the ‘Best Colleges’ rankings were determined
The rankings now prioritize student outcomes, academic resources and reputation over prestige, according to the publication’s methodology.
U.S. News places the greatest weight on student outcomes, which account for 52% of each school’s score. That includes graduation rates, retention, student debt, earnings after graduation and success among low-income students, replacing traditional measures like selectivity and acceptance rates.
