$10.8 million street improvement plan will transform Dickinson Street

The sound of machinery and truck engines filled the air on Binghamton’s West Side on the morning of June 29, as construction crews worked on a street improvement project.

The $10.8 million street improvement plan will revamp the dozens of streets including Beethoven Street, Exchange Street, Fellows Avenue, Lyon Street, Seminary Avenue and Vestal Avenue. On June 29, Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham joined construction crews on Dickinson Street, which will also be included in the project, for a press conference.

“From new pavement and sidewalks that make our streets safer and more walkable, to critical upgrades to our stormwater infrastructure that build flood resilience across the City, we’re making investments that improve daily life for residents,” said Kraham. “I’m proud of the progress we’ve made rebuilding Binghamton’s infrastructure, and we’re not slowing down.”

The project will include full milling and paving of 40 streets, as well as the installation of ADA-accessible ramps and general curb and sidewalk upgrades. The bulk of the project’s funding will cover water, sewer and stormwater upgrades at an estimated cost of $7.6 million.

The project will enlist the help of the Road AI system, which analyzes road conditions and identifies the streets most in need of improvements. According to a June 29 press release, infrastructure work throughout the city in 2026 is funded by Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program grants, Community Development Block Grants and local capital bond.

In May, the city announced a $10 million revitalization project for the Clinton Street corridor a block away from Dickinson Street.

The project will add to the city’s affordable housing stock, create new businesses and fix buildings in serious need of repair throughout the area.
