Matthew Stafford has built up quite the trophy collection during his 17-year NFL career thus far, winning Comeback Player of the Year in 2011, a Super Bowl in 2021 and league MVP last season.
He has a chance to add a few more awards this summer, too, as does Myles Garrett after winning Defensive Player of the Year.
ESPN announced nominees for this year’s ESPY Awards, which take place on July 15 at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, and Stafford is up for two major awards. He’s been nominated for Best Athlete in men’s sports and Best NFL Player, which are two of the more prominent honors at the ESPYS.
Garrett is also a nominee for Best NFL Player, so he’ll be competing with Stafford for that honor.
Here are the other nominees for those awards.
Best Athlete, Men’s Sports
Best NFL Player
The Rams are connected to one other award, but not in a good way. Caleb Williams’ game-tying touchdown pass against the Rams in the divisional round is nominated for Best Play, as he sent the game to overtime with one of the most improbable touchdown passes in league history.
Stafford has some stiff competition in both categories, particularly Best Athlete. Brunson just led the Knicks on a historic playoff run, Messi was electric for Inter Miami in the MLS this season and Ohtani is, well, Ohtani.
In terms of Best NFL Player, it should come down to Garrett and Stafford. Stafford beat out Maye for MVP, and Smith-Njigba had a great season but Stafford led the league in touchdown passes and passing yards. Garrett, however, set the NFL’s all-time record with 23 sacks in one season, so he has a strong case, too.
