The U.S. men’s national team takes on Turkey in the third and final Group D match in the 2026 World Cup at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
While the USMNT has already secured top spot in the group and a spot in the knockout round, history beckons for the Americans. With a win over Turkey, the 2026 USMNT would be the first in program history to win all three group stage games at a World Cup.
The USMNT has been spectacular in the first two games of the tournament on home soil, beating Paraguay, 4-1, on June 12 and Australia, 2-1, on June 19. Christian Pulisic, who has only played 45 minutes in the tournament due to a calf injury, is expected to be available and play in the final group stage game.
Turkey, however, has not had as easy a go of it. Despite being widely considered as dark horses for the World Cup, the European nation has already been eliminated from the World Cup after losses to both Australia (2-0) and Paraguay (1-0), and could finish last in the group.

USA 1 – 2 TUR – Halftime
Halftime – Turkey storms into the lead after an early USMNT goal
The USMNT was in dreamland after a goal in the opening minutes from Auston Trusty, but Turkey has stormed into the lead with two well-taken goals, aided by some really poor defending from the U.S.
Arda Guler is pulling strings for Turkey, and he’s got a goal to his name. Orkun Kokcu’s goal in the 30th minute has Turkey ahead the break.
The USMNT currently looks disorganized, which isn’t surprising given the nine changes made to the starting 11. However, a lack of energy from the squad is more jarring. Expect halftime changes.
45′ +3 Auston Trusty’s header flies over the bar
The USMNT has generated its best chances from corner kicks, and Auston Trusty nearly gets his second goal of the game, but his header flies over the crossbar.
40′ Turkey starting to take control of the game
The energy from the crowd has noticeably dipped as Turkey begins to take control of this game. It was always going to be interesting to see how a heavily rotated starting 11 would operate in a formational change, and how quickly they’d gel.
So far, for the U.S., it hasn’t been great. As for Turkey, they’ve grown into the game and are slowly taking control.
30′ Goal! Turkey takes the lead after more poor defending from the USMNT
Orkun Kokcu scores Turkey’s second goal of the night! And they take advantage of weak defending from the USMNT.
While the first two games were an organized effort, the heavily rotated U.S. side is disorganized at the back, and Turkey is ripping them apart.
It was a beautiful team goal for Turkey, who put together a string of passes before a defense-splitting through ball unlocked a scrambling U.S. defense.
29′ Mark McKenzie puts the ball in the net… but its offside
Another corner kick results in the ball in the net for the USMNT, with Mark McKenzie bundling home a saved effort. However, Ricardo Pepi, who had the shot saved was judged to be in an offside position before the goal was scored.
Oh, so close for McKenzie, who has had an eventful few minutes.
28′ Mark McKenzie, Baris Yilmaz go head-to-head
A hard challenge from Baris Yilmaz on Mark McKenzie, the second collision in minutes between the two, leads to both players squaring up, head-to-head.
A fiesty game here.
27′ Play resumes, Turkey commits a quick foul
After the hydration break, Turkey commits a foul seconds after the restart as Baris Yilmaz runs over Mark McKenzie and is called for a foul. Much to his disagreement
17′ Early tension between the USMNT and Turkey, Sebastian Berhalter gets a yellow
The physicality has amped up in the last few minutes, and with that, a few hard challenges have come in. And a few that required some acting befitting of Los Angeles.
Turkey’s coaching staff has been very frustrated with a few no-calls, and it’s even led to Vincenzo Montella yelling at the fourth official.
Sebastian Berhalter with a nasty challenge, and he gets the game’s first yellow card.
Christian Pulisic is available for 30-40 minutes
According to Fox Sports sideline reporter Jenny Taft, Christian Pulisic is available for 30-40 minutes tonight off the bench.
10′ Goal! Arda Guler scores Turkey’s first World Cup goal in 2026
It took 63 shots, but Turkey has finally scored a goal. Arda Guler carves open the USMNT defense, and he plants a 1-on-1 chance into the top corner, taking Matt Turner completely out of play.
Really poor defending from the U.S., Guler was able to beat the defense with little effort.
8′ USMNT swarming Turkey with counterpress
The USMNT has had much of the ball in the opening minutes of play, but the counterpress (A staple of Mauricio Pochettino) has been relentless and is clearly frustrating Turkey. They’ve been unable to hold the ball for more than a few moments before two U.S. shirts are in their face.
An energetic start.
3′ GOAL! Auston Trusty opens the scoring in minutes
It takes just over two minutes for the USMNT to open the scoring. Auston Trusty scores his first goal for the USMNT! A brilliant service on the corner kick from Sebastian Berhalter, and a wide open Trusty fires his shot into the net.
Second-fastest World Cup goal in USMNT history at 2:15.
2′ A pair of chances for the USMNT
Gio Reyna’s volley is blocked and the USMNT have a corner kick early. On the ensuing corner kick, Weston McKennie misses his shot at the near post, and the ball bounces around before Auston Trusty’s shot is saved by the goalkeeper. A positive start
Kickoff! The final Group D game for the USMNT is underway against Turkey
The USMNT kicks things off as the game is underway in Los Angeles!
Can the USMNT go a perfect 3-for-3 in the group, we will find out in 90 minutes or so.
How many times has the USMNT won the group at a World Cup?
The 2026 USMNT World Cup squad is only the third in the nation’s history to win the group. The only other times it’s happened were in 1930 and 2010. A draw or victory over Turkey would give the USMNT its highest point total in a World Cup group stage on the men’s side.
USMNT’s round of 32 opponent confirmed
The USMNT will play Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco on July 1, with kickoff set for 8 p.m. The matchup was expected and is now confirmed due to results elsewhere in the World Cup.
USMNT’s nine changes are the most in the nation’s history in a World Cup
The USMNT was always going to make significant changes to the starting XI, and the rotation is so heavy that it’s a new record for the nation. The nine changes are the most by a USMNT team in the World Cup, with only Ricardo Pepi and Weston McKennie the holdovers from the starting lineup against Australia.
Christian Pulisic on the bench vs. Turkey
One of the big questions ahead of kickoff was the status of Christian Pulisic. While he is clear to play, the star winger is on the bench for the USMNT, and will likely make an appearance against Turkey. How many minutes will be up to Mauricio Pochettino.

The Americans have given their fans plenty to cheer about through two games, and the expectation is that the game against Turkey will provide more moments of excitement in an unprecedented World Cup run so far for the hosts.
Is Christian Pulisic playing today? Injury update
USA star forward Christian Pulisic had been nursing a calf injury entering the World Cup, and after the first half of the win over Paraguay, he was subbed out after reaggravating it. Pulisic did not play in the win over Australia after spending the week leading up to the game training individually. But Pulisic has returned to training ahead of tonight’s match against Turkey, and is available to play.
