Aldi mystery grocery box giveaway leaves shoppers frustrated

Aldi’s mystery grocery giveaway promotion continues to be popular – and frustrating for those hoping to score free food boxes.

Day One, on June 22, saw hundreds of thousands eager to nab an Aldi Blind Box in the online giveaway, the company said. But they were gone in seconds. And many took to the internet to register disappointment in long waits, only to learn the grocery bundles had all been claimed.

Aldi Blind Blox ‘insider tips’?

The company responded by posting “insider tips” on social media on how to improve chances of getting one of the boxes.

The retailer is offering a different themed grocery box starting at noon Eastern Time each day through June 25.

Among the tips provided: ”Hit ‘Claim an ALDI Box” the second the clock hits” the time of the drop.

The company also said that if shoppers are directed to a checkout queue, that means all of the boxes have already been claimed.

The June 23 drop – this time a fiber-themed mystery box – also sold out within seconds.

This time, though, at the end of initial wait times, many shoppers said the timers reset to extend wait periods, and when those expired, they were told the boxes were no longer available.

“No way my wait time went from 17 minutes and and then after it was my time it jumped to 28 minutes,” responded to Aldi’s Instagram post about the Blind Box promotion. “This is a scam and yall know it @aldiusa!!! And this is day 2 of me trying right at 12!!!”

“This happened to me today too!!! Made sure I clicked fast. Said I was in queue with a 3 min wait time (which was way better than yesterday for me when it said 10 minutes). It got to “less than a minute” then jumped to a 30 min wait in the queue,” another person said. “@aldiusa needs to be held accountable for this. It’s clearly rigged.”

“Definitely a scam!” another asserted. “I went from 7 minutes to 30 minutes to sold out.”

The company has been coy about the total number of boxes available each day. In announcing the drops, Aldi said the quantities were “extremely limited,” and recently told USA TODAY that “more than 100” boxes would be available.
