Adam Schefter: 'Seems to be a lot of momentum' to potential Aaron Donald return

As the 2026 season approaches, one of the biggest questions surrounding the Los Angeles Rams is whether Aaron Donald will come out of retirement or not. He’s already said he’s considering it, but he’s made no commitment thus far.

He’s only thinking about a comeback because the Rams acquired Myles Garrett, which would give Donald the chance to team up with another multi-time Defensive Player of the Year winner. After all, this could be Donald’s best opportunity to win another ring.

Adam Schefter of ESPN was on “NFL Live” Monday and shared the latest on a potential Donald return, and he says there “seems to be a lot of momentum to the idea that this is certainly possible.”

“The idea here is, Donald himself has floated that he could potentially return to Los Angeles,” Schefter said. “He’s thinking about it. Training camp is getting closer next month. They’d have to come up with a plan for him to bring him back. But where else right now would Aaron Donald be more wanted, more celebrated, more respected than in the Rams locker room, where Myles Garrett is already waiting for him? Again, no decision from Aaron Donald and we’ll see whether the two sides can get it done, but there seems to be a lot of momentum to the idea that this is certainly possible.”

Everyone knows Donald stays in shape and works out every day, but there’s a difference between hitting the gym and training for an NFL season. There’s still a lot that would go into Donald returning, whether it’s for the start of the season or a mid-year return for a playoff push.

It’s encouraging that he’s at least thinking about coming back, but nothing has been decided yet. For now, we wait to hear from Donald himself about whether he plans to suit up again in 2026 and go after a second Super Bowl ring.
