Beginning in September, the Amarillo Globe-News recognized some of the top high school performances by soliciting nominations and naming finalists for the Happy State Bank High School Athlete of the Week.
Weekly voting lasted throughout the school year and produced 35 Athletes of the Week.
Now readers will have a chance to choose from those honorees to name a Happy State Bank Fan Favorite High School Athlete of the Year.
Voting is broken down over multiple weeks beginning June 1 and will run Monday through Thursday each week, alternating weeks between boys finalists and girls finalists.
This kicks off the second round of voting for girls high school athlete of the year after 16 semifinalists emerged from the opening week of voting.
The eight athletes who receive the most votes this week will advance to the final round of voting.
Kelton’s McKinzi McManus (2,984) led voting after one week, followed by Hereford’s Mia Gomez (2,383) and Vega’s Khloe Griffit (2,438).
Voting totals reset each week.
The athletes represent schools of every size across the area.
Each athlete is listed in order of votes received in the first round of voting. The final round of voting for Happy State Bank boys high school athlete of the year will begin Monday, June 29. The final round of the Happy State Bank girls high school athlete of the year will begin Monday, July 6.
