Local rapper dies after east side shooting

A man was killed in an east side shooting early June 19, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. He was identified by the Marion County Coroner’s Office as Eric D. Butler, a local rapper.

Police were called to the 200 block of S. Franklin Road around 2:25 a.m., where they found Butler, 35, suffering from injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. He was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition, where he died shortly after arrival, police said.

Butler was known to many as “Lil E,” a prominent rapper in the Indianapolis music scene. According to prior IndyStar reporting, Butler had at one point been involved with the so-called “Grundy crew” that authorities accused of operating a “violent” drug trafficking ring in Indianapolis in 2015. Prosecutors at the time, however, failed to win a single murder conviction against anyone associated with the group.

Police have not yet released information about a possible suspect or what led up to the shooting.

According to IMPD records, Butler was also shot on April 23 at an auto repair shop less than a mile from where he was killed on June 19.

His death follows that of local rapper Cornell Davis, also know as Playbwoi Tha Great. Davis was killed in a May 5 shooting at an apartment on the east side of Indianapolis.
