Off-duty deputy stops theft in progress
A 17-year-old man faces multiple charges after an alleged attempt to steal wine coolers and other alcohol escalated when it was interrupted by an off-duty El Paso County sheriff’s deputy at a convenience store in the far East Side.
The deputy was driving home from work when he saw a theft in progress about 3 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at the Circle K at 2301 Joe Battle Blvd. by Pebble Hills Boulevard, stated a sheriff’s office news release by spokeswoman Priscilla I. Contreras.
The deputy confronted the theft suspects, who ran off. The deputy was able to catch one of them, Jose Angel Rosales, who allegedly resisted and pushed the deputy before being taken into custody, the sheriff’s office stated.
While waiting for a patrol unit to arrive, Rosales was able to free one hand from the handcuffs and allegedly attempted to escape, resulting in a brief chase and struggle as Rosales allegedly attempted to take the deputy’s gun. The deputy retained control of the firearm and held Rosales until backup arrived.
The stolen items were recovered: BuzzBallz, ready-to-drink cocktails in spherical plastic containers, and margarita wine coolers, all worth about $71 in total, the sheriff’s office reported.
Rosales was booked on charges of theft (shoplifting), evading arrest, escape from custody, and attempt to take a weapon from a peace officer.
El Paso County jail records show Rosales was released Sunday, June 14, after posting surety bonds totaling $9,000 plus a $500 cash bond. Persons 17 and older are considered adults in the Texas criminal justice system.
