Where Texas Tech HC Joey McGuire ranks among top coaches in Big 12

There have been a lot of headlines about the Texas Tech Red Raiders over the past several weeks as the Brendan Sorsby saga dragged on, but with that ordeal mostly taken care of, we can now focus on what’s in front of us: the football season.

There are just over 70 days until college football returns, and it’s about time we started talking about the product on the field rather than what’s taking place off it. For the Red Raiders, 2026 could be a historic year, with a good opportunity to repeat as Big 12 champions, and potentially get back into the mix for a spot in the College Football Playoff. To achieve all of that, they’re going to need to be stout on the staff, and that starts with head coach Joey McGuire.

Fortunately, there’s no reason to feel like he isn’t up to the task. This past week, On3 released its Big 12 head coach rankings, and McGuire found his place near the top of the list.

According to Brett McMurphy, McGuire lands at No. 3, sitting behind BYU’s Kalani Sitake and Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham.

“Perhaps Joey McGuire should be higher than third on this list,” McMurphy writes. “After all, he’s the only Big 12 coach with a winning conference record in each of the last four years. Overall, McGuire is 35-18 in four seasons at Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are coming off a school-record 12 victories and their first College Football Playoff appearance. Tech also has won 20 games in the past two seasons, the most since future College Football Hall of Famer Mike Leach did so 17 years ago.”

In four seasons at Texas Tech, McGuire is 35-18, with a 2-2 bowl record, and one trip to the College Football Playoff. He’s proven so far that he’s capable of coaching at a high level, and as the Red Raiders get more bites at the apple, don’t be surprised to see him continue to be considered among the top in the sport.
