Yet another meeting of the Tyrone Township Board of Trustees was recessed amid disruptions and arguments, preceding a disagreement over an upcoming celebration of America250.
The argument — the subject of which wasn’t immediately clear — broke out between residents during public comment June 16, and the recess was requested by Supervisor Greg Carnes.
Afterward, officials discussed the municipality’s celebration of America250 on July 1. While no documents were provided in the packet, Carnes said he and Treasurer Jennifer Eden — with input from the Tyrone Township Historical Society — intended a budget of about $1,600 for a hot dog and ice cream social with music.
During a previous meeting May 19, Trustee Dean Haas moved to discuss what the municipality would be doing for the celebration, with support from Trustee Chris Ropeta — but the measure was voted down. Both men expressed frustration June 16 with the lack of documentation or notice the topic would be discussed.
Carnes suggested moving the celebration to September to allow more time to plan, but Haas and Ropeta, as well as audience members, opposed the idea.
“(This) anniversary is a pretty big damn thing,” Haas said. “I don’t care about $2,000 or $3,000 or $4,000, I want something we’re going to be proud of when we do it.”
Haas motioned to set the celebration budget at $5,000, which passed. The event will run 4-7 p.m. July 1.
