Rodriquez hits for cycle, 7 RBIs as Texas survives CWS elimination

The hottest Longhorn in the postseason so far has been shortstop Adrian Rodriquez. The sophomore might actually be the hottest hitter on the planet. Rodriquez became just the third player in College World Series history to hit for the cycle and tied the CWS RBI record with seven as UT survived elimination by thumping SEC rival Alabama 14-2.

In seventh postseason games, Rodriguez has seven straight multi-hit games, going 5-for-5 with seven RBIs and a cycle against the Crimson Tide at Charles Schwab Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska. The Flower Mound product needed a change in a scoring decision to turn a double into a triple to complete the cycle.

UT’s 1-2-3 hitters of freshman left fielder Anthony Pack Jr., junior designated hitter Ethan Mendoza and Rodriquez combined to go 11-for-14 (.786) with six runs and 13 of the 14 Longhorns RBIs. Texas went 8-for-17 (.471) with runners in scoring position and 9-for-21 (.429) with runners on base.

The Horns got a good start out of senior right-hander Ruger Riojas. Riojas threw 105 pitches over six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, two walks with seven strikeouts.

Texas will face another elimination game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Central on ESPN against the loser of Georgia and Oklahoma on Monday night.
