Great reports at Cowboys most dire position won't mean much until Sept

The Dallas Cowboys have nearly made it to the mandatory portion of their minicamp schedule and all reports surrounding the linebacker room seem to be positive. In what was perhaps their weakest position of the 2025 season, things seem to be moving in the right direction at linebacker here in Year 1 of the Christian Parker era.

Parker, a true teacher and taskmaster, places importance on intelligence and discipline. He won’t tolerate the misreads or free lancing that took place under previous regimes and has assembled a mostly-new cast of characters to handle his defense this season.

Based on reports out of the voluntary practice sessions, the new linebacker group is impressing onlookers constantly, but fans shouldn’t exhale just yet.

Dee Winters, acquired in an offseason trade with the San Francisco 49ers, has reportedly been flying around the field. His elite brand of speed displays his sideline-to-sideline ability and quick reactions. He looks like just the type of starter Dallas has been searching for in the middle of their defense.

Joining Winters inside is holdover DeMarvion Overshown. Like Winters, his athletic ability stands out in minicamp practices.  Even without pads he seems to be operating at the different level as he hopes to make the most of his contract year in 2026.

Rookie third-round draft pick Jaishawn Barham has drawn rave reviews as well. His enormous stature has been leading headlines, but his focused demeanor and quick first step accentuates his status as a budding star linebacker.

Reports around the Cowboys linebacker group haven’t been this good since…last year’s minicamps. As one might remember, coming off a poor 2024 season the Cowboys rebuilt their linebacker corps in the offseason of 2025. Adding Kenneth Murray, Jack Sandborn, and fifth-round pick Shemar James, they added considerable talent heading into the new season.

Murray was frequently complimented for his speed, quickness and physical stature. Sandborn was praised for his intelligence and diagnostic ability. And James was the traded-up-for rookie with all the potential. Reports were similar to those of today because the personnel were all new, a new scheme was falling into place and offseason hope, like usual, was through the roof. Last season, good news was good news until the season started and everyone found out it wasn’t good news at all.

Now, there are dozens of reasons why this season will be different and this cast of characters are far superior to last season’s players. But until it is seen on the field against a real enemy that’s scheming against the Dallas defense, onlookers don’t have a clue what the club really has.

Obviously good news out of minicamp is better than bad news or even no news. But it doesn’t mean things are going to be good in September when things kick off for real. Staying disciplined against misdirection and disguises will be key. Making the right reads in real time and sticking with them will tell the tale. Flying to the ball in camp is important, just like wild displays in athleticism and top grades in the classroom are exciting. But if the intelligence, reads, and discipline aren’t in place, none of that’s going to matter.

The good news is great to hear but it doesn’t necessarily mean good results are on the way. The devil is in the details on this Dallas defense and those are going to take a little more time to develop and display.
