It is World Cup time in North America.
The World Cup kicks off Thursday, June 11, in Mexico as “El Tri” faces South Africa. The tournament, hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico, runs through the final at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, July 19.
It could mark the final World Cup appearances for Lionel Messi, who leads defending champion Argentina, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who could be playing in his sixth World Cup, the most by any men’s player in tournament history.
With 48 teams competing in 12 groups, the News Herald has listed the top 20 teams based on ranking and included a fill-in option for fans to vote for their country. The newspaper is asking readers to weigh in on who they think will lift the trophy. Cast your vote in our official poll and see which teams are favorites among fans.
Voting will be open until noon on Friday, June 12.
