Historic day for Jackson at OHSAA Track and Field Championships

COLUMBUS — You can’t judge the Jackson High School track and field program solely by its distance greats anymore.

The Polar Bears broke new ground at the OHSAA Track and Field Championships on June 7 by winning the team’s first sprint and vault Division I state titles.

Gabby Whalen cleared 12-6 to win the girls pole vault. A couple of hours later, the boys 400 relay of Micah Regimbal, Preston Young, Jackson Baker and Corey Jacobs raced to a win in 41.66 seconds.

The wait was worth it for Whalen, who won her event a day after it started. Meet officials chose to finish the event the following morning after June 6 storms caused two delays. That didn’t faze Whalen, who overcame a miss on her first jump.

Whalen is scheduled to compete with Jackson teammate Taylor Brownsword in the high jump later in the day.
