Starting June 7, folks walking in the Short North will need to take a few extra steps to find a cup of coffee.
Winans Coffee & Chocolate, 611 N. High St., has told customers that it will shut down its shop in the Columbus neighborhood after closing up for the day at 3 p.m. June 6. The newest of its three Columbus-area locations, the Short North Winans opened in February 2024.
The Piqua-based chain sells coffee by the cup and by the 5-pound bag. It got its start in 1961 as a chocolate maker, and it still sells chocolates at its store by the bonbon or by the box.
Winans has two other shops in central Ohio, both within a couple miles of its Short North location: 897 S. Third St., in German Village, and 1125 Yard St., in Grandview Heights. An employee in the Short North said people working there were given the option of transferring to the other shops.
Plenty of coffee options remain for customers in the Short North, too.
“We’re well-caffeinated in the Short North,” Betsy Pandora, president and CEO of the Short North Alliance, told The Dispatch recently for an article on new breakfast options in the neighborhood.
The business organization lists 12 other coffee-serving businesses within its boundaries along High Street from Interstate 670 to Fifth Avenue. That doesn’t include two spots that opened in April: Mornings by Rooh, 685 N. High St., and Maison Skalli, 662 N. High St.
Another Short North coffee shop and cafe, Woodhouse Vegan, 19 W. Russell St., has announced plans to close permanently after the July 4 weekend.
