Sullivan, Dunn, Savatgy among winners at state track qualifier

SUFFERN — Temperatures might have been in the 90s, but that didn’t stop Section 1 athletes from recording personal-best finishes Friday during the third and final day of the Section 1 State Track and Field Qualifier.

It also didn’t stop Bronxville from continuing to dominate Class C competition, qualifying 24 athletes in 15 different events.

As always in make-or-break meets, there was joy and despair, the latter including several disqualifications, including one states-bound relay being DQ’d after one of its runners cursed.

But the focus was, for the most part, on those who’ll make the long trip next weekend to upstate Webster Schroeder High School, which will host the two-day state championships June 13 and 14.

Some athletes will compete in multiple events.

Among them will be Hen Hud sophomore Sophia Savatgy, who won girls Class B titles in the 100, 200 and 400 before anchoring the Sailors’ girls 4×100 relay team to a first place finish in Class B.

John Jay-Cross River’s Sloan Wasserman might have found herself in unfamiliar territory being caught and passed in the final straightaway in the girls Class B 4×800 relay by Tappan Zee senior Bridget Dunn. But both John Jay-Cross River and Tappan Zee qualified for states in the event.

Wasserman (currently the top girls 2,000-meter steeplechaser in the country for 2026) and Dunn, who finished 1-2 in the steeplechase Friday, will both be busy at states.

If she chooses to compete in everything in which she qualified, besides the steeple and 4×800, Wasserman will run the 1,500 and 3,000.

Dunn could also compete in four events with the 800 and 4×400 relay included.

By comparison, Sophia Ochoa will have a far easier schedule.

The New Rochelle senior, who’ll compete next year for Quinnipiac, qualified for states with her 4×100 girls Class A team and also qualified in the triple jump by exceeding her previous personal best by a foot, laiunching herself 39 feet, 11 inches, No. 7 all-time among Section 1 girls.

Her goals for states is to get to 40 feet or better (which she described as her “main goal for such a long time”) and perhaps winning the triple.

“I cross my fingers. I’ve been working towards this a lot at practice and in the weight room.

While explaining she enjoys the relay, Ochoa said, “triple jump just has my heart.

Multiple Section 1 jumpers will be at states, including three from Sleepy Hollow. Gilbert Onwe won the boys Class B triple Friday with a 2026 NY No. 6 jump of 47-5.75.

He’ll join teammates and fellow seniors Brayden Richardson and Dariel Llitera Pichardo at states. They qualified in the long jump.

The three have been dominant this season, as has been Clarkstown South shot putter Connor Sullivan, who is currently second in the state at 59-11, just half an inch behind from the top spot.

Friday, he won Class A and bested everyone with a 59-3 throw, but the Manhattan commit intends to do much more at states.

Sullivan, who feels he’s peaking at the right time, wants to get to 60 feet or beyond and top the podium.

“I’ve podiumed every time so far at states. Last year I finished runner-up for Class A, so hopefully this year it would be awesome to get that number one spot,” Sullivan said.
