As the Chicago Bears look for a new stadium deal, a move to Indiana seems likely.
On Tuesday, the Bears announced that they would be focusing on the Hammond site for their new venue. The announcement came after a vote from the team’s board of directors, marking the first time the board had voted on a new stadium site.
“We believe a world-class stadium project in Hammond will transform the region, connecting Northwest Indiana to the South Side of Chicago through the Loop and across neighborhoods and suburbs stretching north of the city,” chairman George McCaskey and CEO Kevin Warren said. “It will bring Chicagoland together and deliver new opportunities for its residents and businesses.”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that while there are some hurdles to clear, it’s a “done deal” barring anything unforeseen.
The Bears’ project to replace Soldier Field, the oldest and smallest stadium in the NFL, began several years ago. The team was initially focused on a potential site in Arlington Heights, but now it appears the new stadium will most likely be built outside of Illinois.
