NFL analyst explains why Chargers' Justin Herbert will win MVP in 2026

ESPN’s Seth Walder unveiled his way-too-early top 10 list for 2026 MVP candidates, and among the crop was quarterback Justin Herbert.

Here is what Walder had to say about why he thinks Herbert could be in the position to make a push for the award:

I don’t think we can overestimate how big a difference a healthy Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater could make to Herbert’s efficiency and production. Add in Mike McDaniel at offensive coordinator, and this really could be the season Herbert finally establishes himself as an MVP quarterback.

Offensive line stability

Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater form one of the league’s tackle duos when both are available. Herbert has often dealt with inconsistent protection and injuries along the line in recent years. A fully healthy duo, along with a revamped interior, should reduce pressure and open up more opportunities for Herbert’s cannon arm to attack vertically.

Mike McDaniel’s effect

The addition of Mike McDaniel as offensive coordinator brings one of the NFL’s most innovative play-callers. McDaniel excelled at creative schemes in Miami and San Francisco, designing offenses that maximized quarterbacks’ strengths through pre-snap manipulation, play action, and rhythm throws. Pairing this with Herbert’s elite arm talent could unlock the highest level of production in his career.

Why Herbert can win the award

Overall, with better protection and schematic support, Herbert could post elite numbers while leading the Chargers to a deeper run. For a quarterback long viewed as supremely talented but stuck in “what if” territory, 2026 represents his best opportunity yet to claim the league’s highest individual honor.
