Check your freezers, as certain batches of Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread are being recalled for potential salmonella contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported on June 1.
The Motor City brand is widely offered nationwide, including at Publix, Target, Walmart and other stores.
While no instances of illness or injury have been reported, Champions Foods is erring on the side of caution and issuing a voluntary recall, which is being conducted in coordination with the FDA.
The recall was prompted by a California Dairies Inc. milk powder recall that is supplied to Champions Foods by a third-party manufacturer, which provides a seasoning blend used in the Motor City 5 cheese sauce blend.
“Routine testing conducted by the seasonings blend manufacturer prior to use in the production of the 5 Cheese Bread showed that the seasonings batches tested negative for Salmonella; however, we are taking action out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our customers,” Champion Foods shared in a statement.
How do I find out if I have one of the recalled products?
If you have a box of Motor City Pizza Co. cheese bread in your freezer, check the specific product name, the UPC Code, and the sell-by date, which extends into 2027. The sell-by date is printed in black inside the cheese bread image on the pizza’s front, according to the FDA release.

How do I know if I have salmonella?
“Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain,” the FDA reported. “In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.”
