The Florida State Seminoles are looking for their first commitment at running back in the 2027 cycle. Three-star prospect Tai Phillips is one of their top targets at the position.
FSU extended Phillips an offer on May 9, and he has an official visit locked in for June 5. He wanted to see the Seminoles before then, as he took a surprise visit to Tallahassee earlier this week as the team started their first summer workouts. According to the 5-foot-11, 180-pounder, they impressed him.
“It was a great visit,” Phillips said via Warchant. “It was my first time in Tallahassee, so it was a great first impression of the school.”
While he was on campus, Phillips got a chance to chop it up with running backs coach Kam Martin. He’s produced several 1,000-yard rushers since he became a coach, and spoke to Phillips about how he can further his development as a player if he is to come to Florida State.
Schools such as the Ohio State Buckeyes, Virginia Tech Hokies, North Carolina Tar Heels, and Missouri Tigers have offered Phillips as well, but the Alabama Crimson Tide have been looked at as they leader. With that said, Florida State is a top contender as well after his visit this week.
Phillips will be back in Tallahassee on Friday, and he mentioned what he’ll be looking for.
“Really just excited [to] get around the players and more of the staff,” Phillips said. “Get to know them better and see how they operate. … Really just be transparent with me, show me the real Florida State, and make me feel like a priority.”
Rivals’ industry rankings have Phillips listed as the No. 949 prospect in the country and the No. 78 running back. In the state of South Carolina, he’s the No. 16 recruit.
Another great visit this upcoming week will certainly boost FSU’s chances of landing Phillips.
