A Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) bus struck and killed a pedestrian on Interstate 95 South near University Boulevard in a pre-dawn incident May 31 on the Southside.
At about 4:30 a.m., the JTA bus was southbound on I-95. An 18-year-old Jacksonville man was walking east across the interstate. He walked into the path of the bus, causing it to hit him, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.
FHP said the man died at the scene. The 47-year-old bus driver wasn’t injured.
No passengers were on board the bus, which wasn’t in passenger service at the time, JTA said in a statement reported by First Coast News, a Times-Union news partner.
Both FHP and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident.
“The JTA is fully cooperating with both agencies and will continue to assist as needed throughout the investigative process,” JTA also said in its statement to First Coast News.
“The JTA extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual involved,” the agency said.
