New Canandaigua walking tour series

“A Village Life in America Walking Tour” is based on the diary Caroline Cowles Richards kept from 1852 to 1872 detailing her life growing up in mid-19th-century Canandaigua.

Towards the end of her life, she published her diaries in “Village Life in America.” The tour highlights homes in the historic district with stories of their residents and Canandaigua’s past as filtered through her eyes.

This one-hour tour begins and ends at the Gibson Street Park on Gibson Street in Canandaigua.

Dates and times are 2 p.m. Fridays, May 29, June 12 and June 26, July 10 and July 24, and Aug. 7, and noon Saturday, June 6.

Ontario County history exhibit opens

“Door to Western New York: A General History of Ontario County” opens May 29 and includes a ribbon cutting and opening reception from 3 to 5 p.m.

Native Americans during the American Revolution

Author Cynthia G. Neale and Knowledge Keeper Jaime Montour will share their storytelling journey for truth and healing as they explore the role and perspectives of Native Americans during the Revolutionary War. Thousands of Haudenosaunee, including Queen Catharine Montour, a leader of her people, were swept up into this tsunami for freedom.

Their presentation is scheduled for 5 p.m. June 3.

Canandaigua’s past and present in verse

“Shifting Shores: Canandaigua Past and Present” will display a collection of poems created by Canandaigua Middle School Writing Workshop students from June 6 to July 10.

In recognition of America’s 250th, these students reflected on their own lives in response to examining historical documents highlighting the history of the area. Using their original writing, and excerpts from local historical documents, students crafted poems that connect present day life in Canandaigua with the community’s historical roots, showing how life has changed, but in some ways remains the same.

Changemakers in Ontario County

On display through December, “America 250: Changemakers of Ontario County” presents the stories of individuals throughout the county who have made significant contributions to their communities and beyond.

Ontario County Historical Society garden tour

The Historical Society’s annual garden and historic building tour is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. July 11. Details will come.
