Strong winds from storms leave 3,000 without power around Lansing

About 3,000 electric customers in the Lansing area remained without power at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, after late-afternoon thunderstorms pushing strong winds raced across Michigan the day before.

Greater Lansing power outages were about equally split between Clinton and Ingham counties as of Tuesday morning. Clinton County had 1,427 outages and Ingham County had 1,312.

In Eaton County, outages were down to 393 while Ionia County was reporting 1,010 customers without power.

In Clinton County, all outages were among Consumers Energy customers. Ingham County outages included 1,010 Consumers customers and 300 Lansing Board of Water & Light customers.

Outages statewide were down significantly since Monday afternoon when more than 70,000 were without power. About 34,000 remained without power on Tuesday, including about 5,200 in Saginaw County, 4,400 in Allegan County and 3,200 in Macomb County.

A National Weather Service report said winds gusted to 48 mph on Monday near Lansing.

The highest reports included 90 mph Woodbury and 81 mph in Dundee. There were multiple reports of 70+ mph gusts.

More storms are forecast for Michigan and the Lansing area on Tuesday. The NWS said to expect rain after 2 p.m.
