30K without power. Where lights are out in Michigan

More than 30,000 electric customers across the state were without power at 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, after severe weather swept west to east across Michigan Monday afternoon, causing damage and outages.

A strong band of thunderstorms moved across Michigan Monday afternoon, with heavy rain, high winds and hail. Wind gusts up to 90 mph were reported in West Michigan by National Weather Service observers. A gust near Dundee was clocked at 81 mph.

At 4 p.m. Monday, 68,900 customers statewide were without power, according to Poweroutage.us, but as of 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, that number was almost cut in half — with 35,330 customers across all Michigan electric providers are without power.

Consumers Energy said it has restored power to more than 58,000 customers as crews worked through the night to repair infrastructure and restore power to customers.

“While we have made significant progress in our restoration efforts, we know our work is not finished,” Norm Kapala, vice president of grid operations. “Our crews are still in the field assessing damage, making repairs and restoring power to our customers. We will continue to monitor the forecast for additional severe weather and be ready to respond.

Outages Tuesday morning were clustered in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, with most reported in Clinton, Ionia, Barry, Van Buren, Saginaw and Gratiot counties. Outages included 25,020 Consumers Energy customers.

Saginaw County had more than 5,200 outages while Allegan had more than 4,400. Macomb County had 3,200 outages.

More storms are forecast for Michigan Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.
