With water levels dropping below the emergency stage at the Cheboygan Lock and Dam Complex, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has planned demobilization efforts for this week at the site.
According to a May 15 update, DNR crews will demobilize pumps and other emergency equipment to allow for spillway gates to be reinstalled. This is necessary, officials said, as pumps that were used during emergency operations have to first be shut down and then removed in order to reinstall the spillway gates.
When the gates are reinstalled, they will remain fully open. DNR officials said the volume of water passing through the spillway will not change from its current rate of flow. Crews will also reinstall the safety cable that helps keep small watercraft from getting too close to the spillway gates.
The Lincoln Street and Forks boating access sites remain closed for emergency operations.
