“Livingston In Photos,” a series shot by reporter Makayla Coffee, highlights the extra-ordinary happenings of your neighbors.
OCEOLA TWP. — For this week’s Livingston in Photos, I visited an assisted living home in Livingston County where resident Dorothy Macut was celebrating a significant milestone: turning 105.
Macut enjoyed a birthday celebration surrounded by her daughters, grandchildren and even a great-grandchild May 8. She was laser focused on playing Skip-Bo. Her daughter, Dianne Macut, said her mother is always competitive when it comes to card games.
Lauren Luomala, her great-granddaughter, agreed that — growing up — it was always impressive if someone managed to win a game against “baba,” or grandma in Serbian.
Macut was a resident of Temperance, Michigan, for many years, caring for five children while her husband worked. After returning to secure her GED from Bedford High School, she began working at Township Hall.
Macut eventually moved closer to family in Livingston County. When asked for her secret to reaching 105, she admits she doesn’t have an answer.
Dianne said her mother still does word searches, puzzles and other games. Her mother may be getting older, she said, but she still has a great memory.
A few years ago, Macut participated in a spelling bee with Woodland Village in Brighton. She was 102.
