New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh has stressed a clear philosophy during rookie minicamp: Prioritize instruction and preparation rather than competition.
The approach treats the sessions as a “fast rehearsal” to ready drafted players and tryouts for the demands ahead. Harbaugh explained that the camp focuses on fundamentals over standout plays.
It’s a notable change for the Giants, who did things much differently under Brian Daboll, Joe Judge, Ben McAdoo, and even Pat Shurmur.
“This is not a competitive camp. It’s not a camp you’re trying to go out there and make plays,” he told reporters. “There really are no plays to be made. It’s a rehearsal type of a camp. It’s called fast rehearsal when you do the team period, so we’re going to go fast.
“We’re going to try to execute fast. We’re going to try to be on point with great technique. We’re going to rehearse. We’re going to kind of do the dance, so to speak, of football. We’re not actually competing against one another.”
Players compete against themselves, mastering responsibilities on offense, defense, and special teams without violent, physical battles. The goal is orientation—ensuring top picks and undrafted hopefuls understand schemes so they can maximize Phase Two practices and beyond.
Giants assistant general manager Brandon Brown echoed this instructional focus.
“The biggest thing when we brought these guys in for the rookie minicamp was the instruction,” he noted. “You’re not getting a lot of competitive periods out here. It’s who can take to the coaching, what’s the attention to detail.”
The limited roster (49 players) allowed deeper focus on core prospects, integrating soon with veterans, evaluating learning ability, and precision over raw athletic showcases.
This philosophy aligns with the team’s broader offseason ramp-up. True competition builds gradually through training camp and preseason games, while minicamp builds the foundational execution and mental focus needed for success.
By de-emphasizing wins and losses in drills, the Giants aim to develop smarter, more technically sound players from Day 1.
