FOND DU LAC – A 44-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested Saturday, May 9, after authorities say he fled a Wisconsin State Patrol traffic stop on Interstate 41, crashed and then ran from deputies on foot.
Traffic stop near US 151 turns into chase through Fond du Lac
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office said it was notified at 9:03 a.m. May 9 that a trooper needed emergency backup during a stop on northbound I-41 near U.S. 151 in the town of Fond du Lac.
Officials said the driver was wanted on a Kenosha County felony warrant for failing to appear in a case involving operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent.
Authorities said the vehicle sped away as a deputy and another trooper arrived. Deputies later saw it exit I-41 at South Military Road in the city of Fond du Lac and continue at high speed.
The sheriff’s office said the driver stopped briefly, then backed up and headed north on South Military Road. Deputies followed through a business parking lot, then north on South Pioneer Road and west on West Johnson Street before the vehicle returned to northbound I-41.
Near Winnebago Street, officials said the vehicle exited the highway at a high speed, went into an east-side ditch, traveled up an embankment and went airborne over Winnebago Street before coming to rest in a field.
No other vehicles were involved, the sheriff’s office said. The driver ran from the crash but was caught after a brief chase when deputies used an electronic control device.
Suspect treated for minor injuries; multiple felony charges expected
The sheriff’s office said the man was out on a $5,000 signature bond in Kenosha County in the same case tied to the warrant.
Officials said he suffered minor injuries, was treated by North Fond du Lac paramedics and was booked into Fond du Lac County Jail.
The sheriff’s office said it plans to request charges of fleeing or eluding, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, felony bail jumping and resisting or obstructing an officer.
The State Patrol is also seeking charges of fleeing or eluding, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of marijuana, the sheriff’s office said.
Officials said the pursuit covered about 4.5 miles. The North Fond du Lac Police Department and North Fond du Lac Fire Department assisted. No other injuries were reported and no additional property damage occurred, the sheriff’s office said.
