The Barstow Police Department and the California Highway Patrol will be working together to hold a sobriety checkpoint this weekend.
The checkpoint will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 9, and continue through 1 a.m. the following morning at an undisclosed location in the Barstow area, police said in a written statement.
“The primary objective of a sobriety checkpoint is to ensure the safe passage of each and every motorist on our highways by targeting roads where there is a high frequency of drunk driving accidents and/or prior arrests,” the statement said.
“They also help raise public awareness of this important driving safety issue while augmenting regular patrol operations,” it continued.
All drivers passing through the checkpoint will be screened, traffic permitting, officials said.
Funding for Saturday’s operation comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
