For those who knew Bela Lisboa, the consistency at BelAroma feels almost expected — each dish landing with the same quiet confidence that first built its reputation.
Since opening in January, the Mediterranean bistro has leaned into owner Jo Vagos’ Portuguese roots, shaping a menu that feels both personal and deeply rooted in coastal tradition.
Here, the through line is freshness — herbs used with intention, not excess, letting bright, clean flavors lead the way.
Fries are thin-cut, fried in organic tallow, and arrive tossed in fresh cilantro, garlic and aged Italian pecorino Romano.
Wild-caught seafood and local meats anchor much of the menu, from the popular shrimp risotto to Winola Farm chicken Algarvia, finished in a subtle lemon caper sauce.
Even the hummus — pressure-cooked overnight — arrives impossibly smooth, a subtle showcase of patience and technique, while small-batch sourdough, made in-house, rounds out the menu — the base for sandwiches layered with spiced piri piri chicken and thin-sliced prosciutto, each generous enough to share.
Inside BelAroma’s kitchen, there’s a restraint to the cooking that feels increasingly rare.
Dishes aren’t weighed down by heavy sauces or unnecessary flourishes; instead, they rely on the integrity of their ingredients. It’s the kind of small-town spot where nothing feels overworked, yet everything feels considered.
