Officials have identified an Apple Valley woman who was found dead following a SWAT team standoff after they say she stabbed her husband and set fire to their home last week.
Alicia Caudillo, 58, was found dead after firefighters extinguished the blaze at the home in the 15900 block of Washoan Road on Friday, April 24, according to San Bernardino County coroner’s records.
Her cause and manner of death were yet to be determined.
The incident began with a report of a “unknown problem” at the home shortly before 9 a.m., San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Gloria Orejel said at the time.
Upon arrival, deputies encountered a 59-year-old man, later determined to be Caudillo’s husband, at a neighboring property suffering from severe stab wounds, according to a sheriff’s department statement. He was hospitalized for treatment.
Smoke was seen emanating from the couple’s house. Officials learned Caudillo had stabbed her husband during a domestic dispute and set the home on fire, authorities said.
“Deputies attempted to enter the residence to rescue any occupants, but the home was barricaded,” the statement said. “A family member inside the home was able to safely exit the residence before shots were heard.”
A sheriff’s Special Enforcement Division team, or SWAT team, was summoned to take charge of the standoff, sheriff’s officials said. Attempts to make contact with Caudillo were unsuccessful.
Flames grew to engulf the entire home as deputies evacuated nearby residences.
Upon putting out the flames from behind the cover of armored law enforcement vehicles, Caudillo was found dead inside the burned house.
“An autopsy will be done to determine the cause and manner of death,” sheriff’s officials stated.
No further details were available.
