Thousands without power in Palm Springs amid near triple digit heat

Thousands of people are without power in northern Palm Springs on Saturday afternoon as Southern California Edison works to restore power to a swath of the city.

The electrical utility company posted on its website that about 9,200 customers had lost power at around 12:45 p.m. Among the affected areas were the Four Seasons, Racquet Club Estates, and Racquet Club West neighborhoods.

An online graphic showed the outage affecting a teardrop-shaped area stretching roughly from Interstate 10 to the north, as far south as Alejo Road, and from Highway 111 to Gene Autry Trail. However, some residents within that area still had power.

As of about 2:30 p.m., the SoCal Edison website reported that a field investigator was en route, with the situation described as a “repair outage.” However, the agency said it was not known what caused the outage or how long it would ultimately take to fix.

The outage occurred on a hot day in Palm Springs, with temperatures approaching 100 degrees at the city’s airport, though it was somewhat cooler to the north thanks to windy conditions. It was expected to be slightly cooler on Sunday with the National Weather Service forecasting a high of 92 degrees in Palm Springs and 83 degrees at Whitewater.
