A panel discussion on the months after a child is born and a resource fair will offer help to parents during state Sen. Samra Brouk’s fifth annual Community Baby Shower on Sunday, May 3.
The shower will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Ryan R-Center, 530 Webster Ave. It will include raffles and giveaways.
The panel discussion, “Beyond Birth: The Fourth Trimester,” which will be held from 1 to 2 p.m., will focus on a child’s first months and the support families need during that time. According to a news release, panelists will discuss “postpartum recovery, maternal mental health, family support systems and how healthcare providers, community organizations, and policymakers can work together to ensure families have the resources they need after birth.” Attendees may submit questions to the panel.
Brouck, who is chair of the Senate Mental Health Committee and has been working to expand access to doula care, will be one of the panelists. Others will be Dr. Eva Pressman, an OB/GYN and maternal-fetal medicine specialist at the University of Rochester; Stephanie Godleski, a clinical psychologist and associate professor at Rochester Institute of Technology; Phyllis Sharp, a certified doula and a certified lactation counselor; and Katherine “Katie” Sienk, director of maternal and child programs for Rochester Regional Health.
After the discussion ends, the resource fair will begin, featuring community organizations offering resources for parents and caregivers. Families will also be able to receive free baby supplies, including diapers, wipes and formula, and free food.
