Dozens of families were evacuated from a Yonkers high-rise after a fire broke out Tuesday morning, April 28, Mayor Mike Spano said.
There were no serious injuries, Spano said on Facebook, adding that firefighters and first responders acted quickly at the 50 Riverdale Ave. apartment building.
It’s a 240-unit building, Spano said, but he credited responders, saying “fewer than a dozen units were impacted and there were no serious injuries. About a dozen animals were also rescued.”
Residents are being taken to assistance, Spano said, with the city Office of Emergency Management, fire and police departments, constituent services, and the Red Cross, to provide support.
“We’re also grateful to local businesses stepping up with donations of clothing and essentials,” Spano said.
Riverdale Avenue was closed from Prospect Street to Vark Street, the police said earlier Tuesday. Prospect Street was closed from South Broadway to Riverdale Avenue.
