After the fire was extinguished, first responders went inside and found the body of Joyce E. Bassos, 86, a resident of the house. There were no other occupants in the residence.

A preliminary investigation into the cause and origin of the fire conducted by the Broome County Emergency Services Fire Investigators and the Sheriff’s Office Detective Division did not reveal any indication of criminal action.
