In the NFL draft, most teams swing for the easy fixes and players that can make an impact early; development prospects aren’t as prioritized as they once were. Anthony Lucas, a pass rusher from USC, is a developmental prospect who could make teams get back to taking a chance on developmental prospects.
In the Athletic’s latest mock draft, Dane Brugler has the Indianapolis Colts taking development prospect Anthony Lucas. Dane Brugler has the Colts taking Lucas in round 5 with pick 156:
The Colts have consistently taken swings at the edge position, and recently, they got it right with Laiatu Latu. Adding Lou Anarumo, who has had success and is a credible defensive mind, is a big reason to feel confident that a player like Anthony Lucas can thrive with the Colts.
Lucas has the size and strength to win matchups alone on just these two traits. He needs further development in other key areas to become that dominant pass rusher. I think the Colts are a landing spot where he can get that development. The Colts most recently just lost Kwity Payne, and plugging in Anthony Lucas in the rotation for much less seems like a bargain.
