There were 21,446 votes cast in the race for the Joe Orthodontics High School Athlete of the Week poll.
Riverside Prep baseball player Victor Herrera ended with 46.51% of total votes cast by Daily Press readers.
The senior received 9,975 votes, beating out 15 other high school athletes from across the High Desert.
To earn a spot on the ballot, Herrera went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, two runs and a walk in a 23-4 victory over Big Bear on April 8. He followed that by going 3 for 4 with an RBI, four runs and a walk in a 17-3 victory on April 10.
In the voting, Herrera beat University Prep’s Connor Byrom, who received 31.34% at 6,721 total votes.
The nominees were selected based on performances between April 6 to 11.
Nominations are based on information available to the Daily Press. All high school varsity players from the High Desert can be considered for the ballot.
Nominations must be received for consideration by Sunday morning following that week’s games. Anyone can nominate an Athlete of the Week for every varsity sport.
