The shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. at the Brigadoon Apartments at 3220 Seymour Road, according to police, who advised on Facebook for people in the area to stay in their homes.

According to a media release from WFPD Tuesday morning, police got a call about 5:20 p.m. of gunshots fired at the apartments. They found Debra Lucas, 61, shot in the torso inside an apartment along with another man who was shot in the leg.

A witness told officers that Jeremy Patrick Gibson knocked on the door to the apartment, and when Lucas answered, he opened fire, striking Lucas and the man, according to allegations in the media release.

After shooting inside of this apartment, Gibson went to a neighboring apartment where he began kicking on the door, according to allegations in the media release.

“A man answered the door, and Gibson immediately began firing at him,” the media release said in allegations, “striking the man in the chest. Gibson then entered the apartment where he fired at several more people inside, as well as a dog.”

Gibson then fled from the apartment, the media release said.

Lucas was pronounced dead at a hospital, the man in the second apartment was in critical condition with a chest wound and the man shot in the leg is expected to be released with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Mitch Bates, interim chief of police, said in the media release that officers found Gibson in a vehicle in the 1600 block of Santa Fe Street with a handgun in his possession, and he was taken into custody without incident.

A witness on scene told the investigating officers that prior to the shooting, Gibson had been consuming alcoholic beverages for several hours and made the comment he was “going to shoot somebody,” according allegations in the police media release.

Gibson was booked into the Wichita County Jail early Tuesday, according to online jail records.

He was charged with murder, two counts of aggravated assault causes serious bodily injury and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, jail records said.

Anyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless convicted beyond doubt in a court of law. Murder is punishable with 5 to 99 years or life in prison.
